Canadian crime writer to speak in Costa Rica

Canadian novelist William Deverell lives part of the year in Costa Rica.

William Deverell, well-known novelist, activist, and former trial attorney, will speak about “A Writer’s Life” in Costa Rica’s Playa Herradura (near Jacó), on Jan 24, 2012.

The talk, from 11 am to noon and costing 5000 colones (US$10), is part of Allyson Latta’s writing & yoga retreat but is also open to the public. If you want to stay for lunch, the price is 10,000 colones.

Deverell is the author of 14 crime novels, including one—The Laughing Falcon—set in Costa Rica. He twice won the Arthur Ellis Award for best Canadian crime novel and earned the Dashiell Hammett Prize for his novel Trial of Passion.

He divides his time, as they say in author jacket copy, between Pender Island, British Columbia, and Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica. His is one of the few author web sites I’ve seen with a “Vacation Rentals” tab for his house in Costa Rica. Looks like a nice place.

If you’d like to attend the talk, email Jamie Wood, owner of Namaste Gardens, where the retreat takes place: NamasteGardenscr [at]
